Spots can still be a serious problem for lots of us - heavier skin creams, combined with day-to-day stress and pollution can all play havoc on our skin. So we've spoken to top skincare experts to find out what you can do at home to help tackle those blemishes.
1. ‘Try applying witch hazel to your skin,’ says skincare expert Lesley Reynolds of the Harley Street Skin Clinic. ‘It’s great because of its soothing properties, and also helps to reduce oil.’
2. ‘Crush an aspirin and add it to one tablespoon of honey,’ says Lesley Reynolds. ‘Apply the mixture to your spots and leave it on for several minutes. This should take help calm down the inflammation.’
3. ‘Make a mask of honey and oats. Rub it on gently and leave it to work its magic for 10 minutes,’ says Lesley Reynolds.
4. ‘Try using lemon as an acne remedy,’ says skincare adviser Malvina Fraser. ‘Cut a lemon in half and gently rub it onto your spots. Lemons contain citric acid, which attacks the bacteria that causes acne. The stinging feeling means it’s working.’
5. ‘Mix equal parts baking soda and water to form a paste,’ says Malvina Fraser. ‘Use a Q-Tip to apply the paste directly onto each spot, not on your entire face. Leave it to dry for about 10 minutes, and wash it off with cold water. This should help close the pores. However, if your skin becomes irritated or more oily, discontinue treatment.’
6. ‘Tea tree oil is a renowned anti-fungal and antibacterial herbal remedy, making it great for mild moderate acne,’ says Malvina Fraser.
7. ‘Try detoxing in the bath, with lavender oil,’ says Malvina Fraser. ‘The antibacterial steam will open your pores.’
8. ‘Coconut oil makes a wonderful cleansing balm and moisturiser,’ says skincare formulator Jennifer Young. ‘Mix the oil with antibacterial essential oils, such as lavender and tea tree, for a double benefit. Apply the mixture onto your face, leave for a few minutes and wipe off with cotton wool.’
9. ‘Wash your towels and linen regularly, as a build up of bacteria can lead to acne,’ says Jennifer Young. ‘If that fails, try using a natural antibacterial spray (made up of water and antibacterial oils such as tea tree), and spray it onto your pillowcases to help beat spots.’
10. ‘Crush fresh mint leaves into warm honey and apply it to your face,’ says Sorina Groza, head of beauty at Beauty & Melody. ‘Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water.’
11. ‘Strawberries are a great natural source of salicylic acid, which is found in lots of products that fight acne,’ says Sorina Groza. ‘Mix three to four strawberries with two tablespoons of natural yoghurt and leave the mixture on your skin for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.’
