WE STAYED AT...

The Great Tythe Barn (01666-502475), a collection of Cotswold stone buildings set amid a 200-acre estate known as Folly Farm. With rolling hills and a village atmosphere, its star attraction is a Grade II-listed barn dating from the 16th century that is a popular wedding venue. In May, b&b accommodation costs from £55 per room, or there are 12 self-catering cottages sleeping from two to eight guests - a four-night midweek break costs from £140.



WE WENT TO...

Tetbury, a pretty market town, which makes a great base for exploring the Cotswolds. If you're coming from London, the nearest train station is Kemble, or drive there via the M4. The AA Leisure Guide Cotswolds (£9.99, AA), www.glos-cotswolds.com and www.cotswold.gov.uk all have useful information.



WHILE YOU'RE THERE...

Get the camera out. The Cotswolds has many picturesque villages; we shot in Bibury and near Chavenage House, an Elizabethan manor house which has made numerous on-screen appearances.



Go shopping. If you're renting a cottage, stock up on organic produce at a local farmers' market or the Veg Shed on Duchy Home Farm, part of the Prince of Wales' Highgrove estate (open Wednesdays, 01666-53587).



You can't visit the Cotswolds without going for a country walk. There are plenty of well-signed footpaths, or head for the splendid trees of the National Arboretum at Westonbirt.



Hit the pub. We liked the Seven Tuns in Chedworth (Queen Street, 01285-720 242), a 17th-century village inn with open fires and good food.
