WE STAYED AT...
The Grand Hotel Ambasciatori (00 39 081 8782025), an elegant four-star superior hotel with views over the Bay of Naples and across to Mt Vesuvius. It is well placed for exploring this panoramic coastline, and, when you're ready for a little sun worshipping, there's a pool and private bathing deck.
WHAT TO DO...
Sit in cliff-top bars, admiring the beautiful views and each other.
Visit the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum - go early by bus or train.
Hop on a hydrofoil to Capri to go designer shopping and lunch on insalata Caprese.
Tuesday is market day. Good buys include olive oil, white wines and limoncello.
Book your holiday for May or June to ensure you miss the heat and crowds.

Naples. In April, return flights from London Gatwick with British Airways cost from £85, including taxes. Sorrento is set on a scenic peninsula that can be reached by bus, hydrofoil or on the local Circumvesuviana train. Bay of Naples & Southern Italy (£14.99, Cadogan Guides) is a useful guide, or visit sorrentotourism.com.
