Marie Claire Travel: Tokyo

WE STAYED AT…

The Hilton Tokyo (00 81 3 3344 5111; hilton.com), a 38-floor luxury hotel set amid the glittering skyscrapers of Shinjuku.

All the rooms have traditional shohji screens and star features include rooftop tennis courts, an indoor pool, Michelin-starred chef and excellent teppan-yaki restaurant.

It's worth upgrading to the hotel's new Executive floors, where you'll enjoy exclusive service, cocktails and amazing views as far as Mt Fuji. In September, double rooms cost from £158 including breakfast. Japan Airlines (0845 7747 700; uk.jal.com) flies direct from London Heathrow, from £615 return including taxes.

OUR TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO...

Visit Tokyu Hands (12-18 Udagawacho, Shibuya-ku), a department store that sells amazing, only-in-Japan homewares. And be sure to bring home some Shu Uemura eyelash curlers (our make-up artists swear by them).

Sing your heart out at Karaoke-Kan, as featured in Lost in Translation.

Take in a traditional tea ceremony and walk in restful gardens such as Rikugien.

Try a memorable breakfast of Asahi beer and fresh tuna at the Tokyo fish market (tsukiji-market.or.jp). For more dining ideas, see bento.com.

Browse through an up-to-date city guide such as Tokyo (£12.99, Time Out), or visit seejapan.co.uk.
