Oman

WE FLEW TO…
Muscat, the capital of this safe and prosperous Sultanate. Rugged mountains, classic desert scenery and a great choice of five-star hotels makes Oman ideal for a winter sun holiday. In October, flights from Heathrow with British Airways (ba.com) cost from £390 return. For more information, visit mot.gov.om.
OUR TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO
Explore the desert on a 4x4 tour through the dunes and mountains.
Visit Muscat – the souks are surprisingly clean and quiet, but if you want a bargain, prepare to haggle.
Take a boat trip along the beautiful coast, where you could catch sight of dolphins and whales.
From January to June, you can watch turtles nesting on the beach – the hotel has a dedicated Turtle Ranger who can direct visitors.
Enjoy a cocktail. The government has just relaxed the ban on alcohol consumption during Ramadan (13 September to 12 October) for guests at international hotels.
