Grenada

WE FLEW TO...

Grenada, a green and mountainous volcanic island with a laid-back lifestyle. It's great for exploring, and is famous for producing nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger. In December, return flights from Gatwick with Virgin Atlantic (virginatlantic.com) cost from £565. For more information, contact the Grenada Board of Tourism (020 8877 4516; grenadagrenadines.com).

WE STAYED AT...

Spice Island Beach Resort (001 473 444 4258; spicebeachresort.com), a five-star all-inclusive resort set on the island's best-known white sand beach, Grand Anse. This family-run hotel has 64 suites, with private garden and plunge pool, or sea-facing patio. Interiors are chic, and a spa offers treatments using local spices, fruits and herbs. The hotel's top-class restaurant, Oliver's, serves Creole-style dishes, with a traditional Caribbean BBQ on Fridays. Suites start at £374 a night, or a week's package at Virgin Holidays (virginholidays.com) costs from £1,739 per person, including flights and transfers.

OUR TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO

1Take an excursion inland to the Grand Etang National Park, with its rainforest walks, flamboyant flora and crater lakes.

2 Visit Grenada's capital, St George's, where a lively fresh produce market, is open every Saturday.

3 Check out the world's first underwater sculpture park at Moilinere (underwatersculpture.com).

4 Enjoy a drink or meal at The Cove (001 473 4370940), a relaxing, hillside restaurant in Woodford, with stunning views over Halifax Bay.

5 Go island-hopping – take the ferry to neighbouring Carriacou for an even more chilled-out atmosphere.
