Despite its history, even the most frequent of Miami tourists would be forgiven for not being familiar with the National. It’s one of the oldies now nestled in-between the endless string of hotels on Collins Avenue. But what the newbies may lack in charm, the National has in abundance. Much like Miami in its entirety, The National is art deco to the core. From the glossy, dark wood in the lobby to the pastel pink walls, this place has a real identity that earns its place in the line up of Historic Hotels of America.

Collin’s Avenue is the heart of Miami and the only place to base yourself if you want a real understanding of the area. Don’t expect it to be quiet though, there’s a built-in humdrum that goes on way into the night and the atmosphere is charged. Thankfully, the National’s cabana rooms have been built for this very reason. Stretching out alongside the 200ft long infinity pool, the 36 colonial-style rooms are set away from all the activity, overlooking the expanse of South Beach. Each room has its own balcony and we found it more than easy to spend our evenings out on ours, with gin and tonic in hand.

The real heart of the hotel is the pool. Lined with cabana huts containing double beds tucked away inside, it’s the old school glamour that usually comes with a much higher price tag.

The fine dining restaurant menu is well worth a try one evening and the low-key Aqua Bar & Grill is more than reasonable for a poolside lunch. Always on the hunt for a good breakfast, we found the full buffet style breakfast for $24 will set you up for the day.

A self-confessed oasis from the madness of Miami, The National offers the kind of grandeur we’ve forgotten to expect from a hotel. The standards have been well and truly raised.
