The Lambert Arms
By Carla Bevan on Friday 16 October 2009
If your idea of the perfect weekend break involves sipping bubbly and having someone paint your nails, while your boyfriend just wants to drink pints, read the paper and pretend he's about 102, I might just have found your perfect destination.
The Lambert Arms, just outside Oxford, is styling itself as the UK's first 'bar with spa' - and I'm a convert.
The pub part - a rather nicely converted old inn complete with traditional bar and top-notch gastropub-style restaurant - houses nine traditional bedrooms, making it a great spot for an overnight dinner, bed and breakfast stay all by itself.
Take a few steps round the side of the building, however, and you'll find a swanky modern wing with another 35 larger rooms - all fluffy towels, power showers, plasma-screen TVs and extra-large beds - and the all-important spa.
Although bijou in size - we're talking just two treatment rooms and space for manis/pedis - the (ridiculously low-priced) treatments are top notch and there's a sunny patio outside where you can nurse a large glass of wine while you wait for your nail polish to dry or, on the day I was there, watch a bride-to-be pose for photographs with her family.
Great rooms, fabulous food and inexpensive spa treatments - even the other half can't complain about that.
