A Corner of Eden, Lake District, England
There are hundreds of reasons to recommend the gorgeous A Corner of Eden on the edge of Cumbria’s Lake District, but for my money, it’s all about the muesli.
Others may rave about the painstakingly beautiful interiors, the homemade blackcurrant gin on their nightstand, the rugged surrounding landscape or the 'butler's pantry' packed with scrumptious treats, I, however, will return for the homemade muesli alone.
Rustled up by owner Debbie Temple, the muesli (have you ever noticed how hard it is to spell muesli? I’ve managed to get it wrong three times in a row now, thank God for spell check) isn’t the only thing which benefits from the personal touch here. Partner Richard made the dining table from wood destined for the rubbish tip (and the mirrors in one of the bathrooms for that matter); he’s also responsible for the gin in the bedrooms and the chutney in the larder.
For guests who don’t fill up on complimentary treats from the pantry, there’s a pub just three fields’ walk away, although, with a wood fire, books and games to keep you occupied, and a well-stocked honesty bar, it's all too easy to stay put, no matter how appealing the world outside.
With just four rooms (and two shared bathrooms), A Corner of Eden makes a great place for a house party. If you do hire the whole place (from £440 per night, with a minimum two-night booking), Debbie and Richard can also be persuaded to cook dinner. And if their muesli is anything to go by, it's likely to be pretty damn good.
Bed and breakfast rates at A Corner of Eden start from £65 per person, per night. Call Debbie and Richard on 015396 23370, or log onto www.acornerofeden.co.uk for more information and to see lots more great photos.
