Le Meridien Hotel and Spa, Malta

Marie Claire Travel: Malta, Le Meridien Hotel, Balluta bay, St Julians, Malta Le Meridien

This five-star hotel on the seafront of Balluta Bay in Malta opened a couple of years ago and has really set the standard on this small stretch of coastline.

With excellent service and fantastic spa facilities - where you can book yourself a me-time treat or enjoy the fitness suite, heated indoor pool, fully-equipped gym and dance studios - plus, a roof-top pool and sun deck with impressive views of the Mediterranean, it really doesn’t get much better!

Pools are a real bonus in this area as the beaches here are rocky, and although I spotted people swimming in the bay the water look very deep. If you require some serious lane swimming, there is the retro-looking Neptune’s swimming pool adjacent to the bay, although it's highly unlikely you'll get bored in the hotel's own two pools.

The hotel has been created with fitness and wellbeing in mind, although thankfully no one will pass judgement if you just want to chill out and relax. There is also a host of other activities and water sports available nearby, including golf and horse riding, waterskiing and diving.

Back in the hotel, the rooms are decorated in soft, warm, Mediterranean colours and comfortable furnishings, with possibly the largest, softest, sleep-inducing pillows on earth. Each bathroom boasts a large rain shower and lovely, generous sized products for your stay and, for those serious about fitness, a set of scales (which I chose to ignore!)

Smile nicely when you check in and try and nab a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the bay, where you can sit on your balcony and listen to the waves gently crashing against the rocky shore below, interrupted only by the low clanging of the church bells in the early evening.

If you can drag yourself away from the view, there are four different restaurants in the hotel offering a variety of menus, from a la carte to less formal meals. If you can't, then spoil yourself with room service, which includes an inexhaustable selection of healthy meals, indulgent treats (a large bowl of Malteasers, anyone?) and even a rubber duck for the bath!

DETAILS: Le Meridien St Julians Hotel & Spa starts from €165 (approx. £129) per room per night. This price is based on two people sharing a deluxe seaview room, and does not include additional per room, per night charges that may be imposed or local taxes. To book, go to www.lemeridien.com/malta or call 08000 28284.
