Radisson Edwardian, Manchester
By Ruth Doherty on Monday 1 September 2008
If you're looking to combine luxury (this hotel is officially the only five-star hotspot in Manchester) with convenience, the Radisson Edwardian should be your first choice.
Why? Well, there's a myriad of reasons. Let's start with the luxury part. First impressions, as we all know, are hugely important, and this one doesn't disappoint. A vast marble-floored entrance littered with awesome Oriental-inspired artefacts creates instant wow-factor, building up great expectations for the room itself.
And, big sigh of relief, the sleeping space is equally pleasing. The dark wood furniture and deep blue carpet create a sleek masculine mood, while so-comfy bed bootie adds the feminine feel.
Head to the grand Opus One restaurant for a pre-dinner (or party) cocktail and relax in its sumptuous maroon-walled setting with ambience-inducing floodlit bar. Here, too, you'll find plenty of Eastern promise, with kimonos hanging majestically on the walls.
But the pièce de résistance has to be the Sienna Spa, a little gem located at the bottom of the hotel. The pool is set in white-washed limestone, and the Jacuzzi is the ideal place for a girlie get-together; something that plenty of others seem to have cottoned on to, so be warned that you may be competing for space with bubbly brides-to-be and and their equally chirpy hens.
Now for the convenience bit. Whether you're going for an aforementioned hen do, or simply to check out the vibrant city of Manchester (well worth doing, by the way), it'd be hard to find a better placed - or more upmarket - base camp. Just off Deansgate (better known as party central) you won't have to totter far to find the bars, and the shopping meccas of King Street and St Ann's Square (high-end high street/designer boutiques) and Market Street (high street heaven) are just a pound's throw away.
And, if all that's not enough, the down-to-earth yet professional staff have that upbeat Mancunian manner, which helps seasoned five-star visitors and first-time five-star stayers feel equally at home. There's a reason why celebs like Kylie Minogue, Cheryl Cole and Beyoncé are regular guests. Oh, and we might also mention it won silver for Large Hotel of the Year at the enjoyENGLAND 2008 awards.
You get the picture...
