An African Villa

By Lucy Davies  on Wednesday 21 November 2007

An African Villa, Cape Town

IF YOU'RE FED up with the anonymity of chain hotels, Cape Town's An African Villa is the polar opposite. Situated in the pretty residential area of Tamboerskloof a stone's throw from the buzzy bars and restaurants of Kloof Street, the 'villa' consists of three townhouses, presided over by owners Jimmy and Louis (and their dachshunds Button and Zip).

The key is the attention to detail, from the fabulous decor – think contemporary African with quirky touches – to Louis and Jimmy's consistently excellent restaurant recommendations and advice. Rooms are stylish and comfortable with all the accoutrements expected of a boutique hotel – ask for one with a balcony for incredible views of Table Mountain.

The lounge and library, left, with their squashy sofas, are perfect for a complimentary pre- or post-prandial drink and provide free internet access alongside more old-school reading materials. Hearty breakfasts are served on the patio by the ever-friendly staff, or, in inclement weather, the chic, chocolatey toned dining room. A lesson in how cheap chic should be, but so often isn't, done, it's no surprise that it's always full – book well in advance to experience this genuine slice of Capetownian hospitality.

Details: An African Villa, 19 Carstens Street, Tamboerskloof, Cape Town, South Africa (00 27 21 423 2162, www.capetowncity.co.za/villa). Double rooms cost from £64 per night based on two sharing, including breakfast*.
