The Lake District
Rex Features
WHY GO?
If you're the outdoorsy type, you'll adore the Lake District. Enjoy hundreds of different walks, soak up the stunning views and then toast your hard work at one of the fabulous local pubs nestled between the hills and valleys.
WHAT TO DO?
The whole point of the Lake District is walking, so come prepared with sturdy boots and, this being England, some waterproofs. This area might be famous for its lakes, but it's the steep hills that divide them up that'll really get your heart racing.
WHERE TO STAY?
If you're looking for luxury (and after an eight-hour walk up the side of a mountain, you'll certainly feel like you deserve it), Armathwaite Hall ticks all the country-house-hotel boxes with roaring log fires, fabulous views across Bassenthwaite Lake and a notable restaurant. Along the same lines, The Samling, with just ten beautiful rooms, offers luxury with a personal touch. Good B&Bs include Rainors Farm (019467 25934, info@rainorsfarm.co.uk), with its three guest rooms and yurt; Yew Tree Farm (015394 41433, info@yewtree-farm.co.uk), which featured in the Renee Zellweger vehicle Miss Potter; and the recently refurbished A Corner Of Eden Luxury B&B (015396 23370, enquiries@acornerofeden.co.uk). For those on a budget, there are plenty of campsites to choose from, too. Try www.lake-district.com for a comprehensive list.
WHERE TO EAT?
The Punch Bowl is an award-winning pub in Kendal that's a favourite with locals and visitors alike. Make sure you try the Tag Lag ale stew with thyme dumplings. If tea is more your thing, there's a whole 'tea trail' you can follow, which will take you from tea shop to tea shop. Try The Tea Garden or Grey Stake Cycle Cafe if you like your cakes Aga-baked and wholesome.
FOR MORE INFO…
The best books we found for the trip were The Rough Guide to the Lake District and Pathfinder Guide: Lake District Walks.
