Wimbledon
WHY GO?
The Wimbledon Tennis Championships might not be the only reason to go to Wimbledon, but they're certainly a popular draw! Running from the middle of June to early July (depending on the good old British weather), most tickets are allocated on a draw basis and to members of the Lawn Tennis Association. However, 500 tickets a day are also sold to the public for centre court and courts No 1 and No 2. You can also queue up to buy one of 6,000 tickets for general ground admission. Call 020 8971 2473 for more information.
STAY AT…
You don't need to spend a fortune to stay in Wimbledon, even during the tennis. Recently refurbished, The Antoinette has 50 rooms close to Wimbledon's main transport links.
EAT AT…
Once you've tired of the strawberries and cream at the tennis, try Slurp (138 Merton Road, 020 8540 7918) for cheap but delicious noodles. If you prefer Italian and don't mind paying a little more, Lighthouse (75-77 Ridgeway, 020 8944 6338) gets rave revues.
SHOP AT…
Leave the high street behind and travel a little up the hill to Wimbledon Village for a choice of designer boutiques to rival the most cosmopolitan of cities, including Matches, Comptoir des Cotonniers, Diane Von Furstenberg, Joseph, Max Mara and Whistles.
EXPLORE…
The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is open throughout the year, while Wimbledon Common is the place for a picnic. If you're in an outdoorsy mood, horse riding can be booked at Ridgway Stables (020 8946 7400) or Wimbledon Village Stables (020 8946 8579), which are both on the common. Cannizaro Park is also a picturesque spot and its annual open-air festival a real treat. Back in town, there are two theatres, the New Wimbledon Theatre (The Broadway, 0870 060 6646), and Polka Theatre (240 The Broadway, 020 8543 4888); both are worth a visit.
