Blackout by Britney Spears
By Jennie McNulty on Tuesday 30 October 2007
The continuing soap opera that is the life of Britney Spears has captured the world for months, so when she produced her fifth album, Blackout, did anyone really believe she could reinvent herself as the princess of pop?
Well luckily for her, Britney has some talented producers behind her new material, including Bloodshy and The Neptunes. Without a ballad in sight, the album makes no apologies for the singer's current, some might say dubious, lifestyle choices. The sleazy yet energetic electropop sound and autobiographical lyrics celebrate her sex-loving, hard-partying ways.
But the heart-rending side of Britney's life is revealed in tracks like Why Should I Be Sad, referring to her marriage breakdown and Piece of Me, an attack on the media's perception of her.
There are exciting sounds across the record, such as the brilliantly rhythmic, military feel to Toy Soldier and the original combination of Spanish guitars and glam rock beats on Ooh Ooh Baby.
Making an electro-dance-pop album is not the most innovative move, with Madonna and Kylie's most recent offerings in the same mould. But with Blackout Britney has delivered slickly produced, superior pop: a very definite attempt at salvaging her career.
