Amos in Ohio by Kyle Andrews
By Nuria Stylianou on Thursday 30 November 2006
This debut album from Chicago-born singer-songwriter Kyle Andrews was originally released in 2005 on a small Nashville circuit. Record label Badman have since picked up the album and decided to go global with it. Lucky for us they did, because this guy is something special. He shares roots with underground acoustic singers such as Bright Eyes, Elliot Smith, Sufjan Stevens and the Postal Service, and on his MySpace page describes himself as 'alternatve/acoustic/electronica', which is really rather apt. Quite a quirky soul, he took to recording the album in his bedroom, which only seems to add to the overall intimate effect (both in sound and lyrics). He even enlisted the help of friend Neil Mason, who added live drum takes to the songs. 'He [Neil] was usually hearing these songs for the first time – so he is really just reacting. I like the way people play when they are just reacting, they tend to play with more honesty,' says Andrews.
So there you have it: Amos in Ohio is an honest, quirky, spontaneous and heartfelt acoustic album underpinned with electronic beats. It might be a break-up album, but its reflective mood won't leave you feeling crippled. Current faves are Your Test Bunny, an ode to schoolgirl crushes and uncertainty, Connecting the Dots, and the title track, Amos in Ohio.
