Marie Claire Film Reviews: Summer Hours

France's leading filmmaker and its star Juliette Binoche give an underwhelming performance

Starring Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling

You'd think when one of France's leading filmmakers finally gets the chance to direct its finest actress, there'd be more fireworks than Bastille Day. But Olivier Assayas' Summer Hours, the story of three siblings dividing the spoils after their mother dies, is anything but an explosive collaboration. So laid back is Binoche, as a blonde-haired porcelain designer, it feels like she's just popped in on her day off. The result is quite underwhelming.
