Just like his 2003 debut, The Station Agent, Tom McCarthy’s latest is a little gem. Veteran character actor Jenkins plays an economics professor who forms an unlikely friendship with an illegal immigrant couple squatting in his flat. While McCarthy surveys lingering intolerance in a post-9/11 New York, Jenkins ensures it never gets too earnest. His lonely soul who finds meaning is a masterclass in subtlety.
