Strong performances lift this story beyond tabloid sensationalism

Starring Casey Affleck, Amy Ryan

Ben Affleck continues his post-J-Lo career rehabilitation with this competent directorial debut, a Boston-set thriller starring little bro Casey as a gumshoe tracking down a kidnapped girl. With its eerie similarities to the Madeleine McCann case, it's an uncomfortable watch. But strong support - including the Oscar-nominated Ryan as the child's drug-addicted mother - lifts it beyond mere tabloid sensationalism.
