The Curse of the Golden Flower
By Rose Longhurst on Friday 13 April 2007
Starring Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li and Jay Chou
The minute the screen explodes with colour it becomes obvious this is the most expensive Chinese film of all time. The busts of a thousand courtiers bounce within their exquisite corsets as ten thousand soldiers' armour gleams. Despite grandiose looks, The Curse of the Golden Flower has a family's rotting relationships at the core of the film. Being the Imperial family, their power struggles and betrayals have repercussions for the rest of the China. Full of the tragedy, passion and stylised violence we've come to expect from director Zhang Yimou, but somehow not as satisfying as his other hits Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
