Babel
By Rose Longhurst on Tuesday 16 January 2007
Starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael Garcia Bernal, Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi
Documenting four interconnected stories occurring on three continents, Babel is a rich and detailed exploration of isolation and communication. Although Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are convincing as a couple holidaying in Morocco in an attempt to overcome their marital difficulties, Babel is most successful during the segments set in Japan and the North African desert. Expressing incredible depth merely using body language, Rinko Kikuchi is stunning as the deaf-mute Chieko. Beautifully shot, Babel will appeal to anyone who enjoyed Crash or 21 Grams, director Alejandro González Iñárritu's previous hits. With seven Golden Globe nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Pitt, Babel looks set for Oscar glory in 2007.
