The Still Point by Amy Sackville
By Eithne Farry on Monday 25 January 2010
In an old and dusty house, Julia attempts to sort out her explorer great-uncle's archive, while struggling with depression and a sense of foreboding about her marriage. In a contrasting landscape - a frozen wasteland - 100 years earlier, Edward Mackley is fatefully heading for the North Pole, leaving behind his young wife in the stifling confinement of his family home. These two shimmering narratives, both dealing with emotional distance, reflect and refract the feelings of abandonment, hope and fear that are so much a part of love and longing.
