The Wilding by Maria McCann
By Eithne Farry on Monday 25 January 2010
This historical delight reveals how small, seemingly serene, communities can conceal the most monstrous secrets. Jonathan Dymond, a handsome cider presser, makes the rounds of local orchards in 17th-century England. But an atmosphere of unease quickly disrupts the surface when Jonathan's father receives a letter from his dying brother hinting at vengeance, cruelty and a stolen inheritance. Following his uncle's demise, Jonathan sets out to solve the mystery and encounters a strict, religious aunt, who is determined to hide the truth at any cost.
