The Unnamed, by Joshua Ferris

A sombre look at the dark underside of the American dream

Tim Farnsworth loves his wife, his daughter and his job, but he doesn't love the mysterious affliction that forces him to walk treacherous, purposeless miles across a hostile country. There's no diagnosis for his condition - the ‘unnamed' of the title - but its effects are palpable: Tim's health becomes parlous, and his behaviour wrecks his marriage and alienates his daughter. This is not a cheery read. Devastatingly sad and emotionally raw, it is, nonetheless, compelling.
