The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse

The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse - Book Reviews - Marie Claire

A poignant, spooky study of mourning and redemption as a young man comes to terms with the past

Mosse's previous offerings - Labyrinth and Sepulchre - were sprawling, occult epics. The Winter Ghosts, at a mere 272 pages, is a more sprightly, but equally supernatural affair. World War I wrecked many families, and the Watsons have never recovered from the death of George. His younger brother Freddie, suffering mental anguish that's akin to madness, heads to the south of France in the winter of 1928 hoping for quietness and relief. When his car skids off the road in a lonely place, he hears an eerie echoing voice coming from the woods and takes refuge in an isolated village. He meets an ethereal young woman called Fabrissa, who is not what she seems, and who leads him to unlock a sorrowful, centuries-old mystery.
