A Mercy by Toni Morrison
By Eithne Farry on Thursday 30 October 2008
Toni Morrison’s first novel in five years is set in an America where religious persecution is rife, oppression is commonplace, the landscape is hostile and slavery is in its infancy. Into this abrasive atmosphere the novel’s characters attempt to conjure up the means to live and love. The wounding experiences of Jacob, a trader and adventurer, his wife Rebekka, Lina, their Native American servant and Florens, a small slave girl – are described in a series of bleakly beautiful vignettes which catch at the heart - as their worlds collide and break apart.
