Shades of Green – A (Mostly) Practical A-Z for the Reluctant Environmentalist, by Paul Waddington
By Tannaz Allaway on Tuesday 1 January 2008
(Paperback, £10.99, Eden Project Books)
If youve resolved to help save the planet, a good place to start is with a copy of this book.
An A-Z guide to greenness covering everything from jewellery to potatoes, it highlights a sliding scale of options to help us make more informed environmental decisions.
I stop short of saying Shades of Green offers clear solutions every time it cant, simply because the issues are sometimes too complex or the information needed to make a decision is not within every consumers grasp. But it does raise very interesting points and shows that occasionally the greenest options are actually quite unexpected.
Candles, for example, are the most un-planet-friendly form of lighting. And in fact, sometimes it is better to buy your apples from New Zealand than from the next county. And have you ever thought about the carbon footprint your virtual Second Life avatar leaves behind?
Well written and providing helpful links to further information, this is an essential reference for every conscientious modern person.
