The Teahouse Fire, by Ellis Avery
In 19th-century Japan, Aurelia, a young French-American, is adopted into the refined Shin family, who are adept at 'The Way of Tea' – a ceremony laden with poetic gesture and meaning. Aurelia falls in love with the ritual, while also nourishing a secret passion for the mistress of the house. On every page there's a gorgeous image to savour. The pace can be smoulderingly slow, but it's also hypnotically beautiful.
