Where There's a Will by Matt Beaumont
By Tannaz Allaway on Wednesday 17 January 2007
Alvin Lee teaches at Wood Hill, a school set in a deprived inner-city part of London. He loves his job working with troublesome teenagers, even though it doesn't pay half as much as he needs (bailiffs took the TV) but still, he has the support of his loving girlfriend, Karen, and their kids – so life is OK.
An all-round nice guy, Alvin does everything he can to help his students, but when he steps in to help an old lady being mugged outside a massage parlour, his life takes a turn for the worse – despite the fact that he's inherited millions of pounds.
With his family gone and a prison sentence looming, not to mention the vigilantes at his door, can even the eternal optimist in Alvin see a light on the horizon?
A light-hearted, racy, thoroughly entertaining read, 'Where There's a Will' comes straight from the Nick Hornby/Mil Millington school of catastrophe-prone, middle-aged family men, at the same time being a witty take on modern urban teenagers – Asbos, warts and all.
Where There's A Will (£6.99, HarperCollins) is out now
