Thousands hit as Wrapit wedding list service closes
It’s every bride’s worst nightmare and now thousands of newlyweds are being hit by the news that they will not receive any of their wedding gifts, as wedding list service, Wrapit, has officially gone into administration.
Two thousand couples who have lists with the online service face losing £5 million of presents and must now handle the painful task of contacting up to 100,000 guests to tell them to try to reclaim their money spent on presents – which will never reach the newlyweds’ homes.
If guests paid for items over £100 with a credit card, they should find it easier to reclaim their money. However, it is believed at least 20,000 people used debit cards to pay for gifts and have been told their best hope is to have their names added to Wrapit’s long list of creditors.
Brides who have been hit by the news are understandably furious and have planned a protest march tomorrow, dressed in full wedding attire, to the headquarters of HSBC bank, which Wrapit has blamed for its collapse.
According to the eight-year-old company, the bank withheld its credit and debit card income, leaving it with a cash crisis.
Until recently dubbed ‘the ultimate wedding service’, Wrapit has been going through the mill on internet forums, where angry customers have been venting their resentment.
‘God I feel so embarrassed about this one,’ one bride admitted.
Wrapit’s managing director, Peter Gelardi spoke to The Times: ‘It is a terribly sad situation and I really feel bad for all the couples who have had the disruption and embarrassment at this time.
‘If HSBC were able to take a more pragmatic view, and use this money to fulfill these deliveries, then all the couples and their guests would be happy. But sadly we are not a big enough company to make them inclined to change the rules. It’s a ridiculous situation.’
