The detective leading the Oscar Pistorius inquiry is facing seven charges of attempted murder.
South African police confirmed Detective Hilton Botha was allegedly involved in a shooting two years ago.
He is due to appear in court in May with two other officers after allegedly opening fire on a minibus taxi loaded with passengers. The charges against Botha had originally been dropped but were reinstated.
Medupe Simasiku, a spokesman for the Pistorius prosecutors, told Associated Press they were unaware of the charges and would now investigate whether the detective should remain.
Paralympian Pistorius denies the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Stankamp, who he shot on Valentine's Day, claiming he mistook her for an intruder.
