Public relations expert Max Clifford is the latest suspect to be arrested in connection with Scotland Yard's Operation Yewtree, which investigates allegations of historic sex abuse cases surrounding Jimmy Savile and others.

Clifford, who was arrested at his Surrey home at 7:40am this morning and taken to a central London police station for questioning, is the sixth person to be questioned and fifth to be arrested as part of the Operation Yewtree probe, which involves a team of 30 officers and has already cost around £2million to investigate sexual abuse claims made against Savile and other entertainment world figures.

According to a Met spokesman, Clifford 'falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed "Others". We are not prepared to discuss further.'

(Operation Yewtree has three strands: claims made against Savile, those made against Savile and others and allegations against 'others' unconnected with the Jimmy Savile investigations).

Clifford's arrest follows the arrests of Gary Glitter, comedian Freddie Starr, DJ Dave Lee Travis and retired BBC producer Wilfred De'Ath, who have all been bailed as part of the probe. An unnamed man in his 80s was also questioned under caution last week.

In October, Clifford said he had been contacted by a number of celebrities from the 1960s and 1970s who were 'frightened to death' about being implicated in the Savile scandal.

'All kinds of things went on and I do mean young girls throwing themselves at them in their dressing rooms at concert halls, at gigs, whatever,' Clifford said.

'They never asked for anybody's birth certificate and they were young lads… suddenly everyone's dream was a reality.'
