Controversial author Salman Rushdie has fumed about the success of Fifty Shades, saying it makes 'Twilight look like War and Peace.'

Speaking at the New York Festival over the weekend, he said he had read a couple of pages of the raunchy book on Amazon.

However, he was highly unimpressed, adding 'I've never read anything so badly written that got published.'

Fifty Shades has sold over 40 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling book in the UK ever.

Rushdie was also speaking about his new memoir describing his life after a fatwa was issued against him in 1989 by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini after Islamic outrage about his book the Satanic Verses.

He was forced to cancel a visit to a literature festival in India earlier this year after assassination threats were made against him.
