Former mayor of Southwark, Columba Blango, has shocked colleagues with his comments on domestic violence.
The Liberal Democrat councillor appeared to be comparing domestic violence with smacking.
Cllr Columba Blango, who represents the Rotherhithe ward in South East London and is a colleague of the Lib Dem deputy leader Simon Hughes, made the remarks in a council meeting.
Questioning an officer about domestic violence, Cllr Blango asked whether 'outbursts in the home may be an angry response to provocation.'
He also said: 'Some perpetrators might not be able to prevent themselves' from slapping their partner in 'the spur of the moment' and later added 'It’s like smacking. Some people see the benefits of smacking. Some don’t see it.'
Southwark News reported that he refused to apologise for his remarks as he claimed he was asking a genuine question.
