Fortune’s annual Most Powerful Women ranking has shown the technology sector has produced more powerful women this year than any other industry.

Eight out of the top 50 work at technology companies, with IBM's CEO Ginni Rometty at number one.

Hewlett-Packard’s Meg Whitman, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg (pictured) and Oracle’s Safra Catz are in the top ten.

This comes despite the fact the US National Center for Women & Information Technology reported that just 18 per cent of 2010 Computer and Information Sciences undergraduate degree recipients were female and that just 25 per cent of the computing workforce was female in 2011.

Other tradionally male-dominated areas had female representation on the list. The aerospace and defence industry had five women on the list, including three from Lockheed Martin alone.

Meanwhile Oprah Winfrey dropped 34 spots to number 50.
