Apple launched its newest product in San Francisco yesterday - the long-awaited iPhone 5.

Described as the thinnest, lightest and fastest handset yet, the phone has a taller 4in screen and is capable of running on the recently launched 4G mobile networks.

Apple are expecting to shift even more phones in the runup to Christmas than the 37m that were sold last year. Research firm IDC is predicting a sale of 51million.

The online audience following the showcase was the largest so far.

Apple released their first iPhone in 2007 and have now become the world's most valuable company, with $620bn market capitalisation and $100bn held in foreign banks.

The phone goes on sale in the UK from September 21, with unsubsidised prices starting from £529.
