It may be standard routine to sign off office emails with an ‘X’ or a simple smiley, but research shows that messages which include such emotions are more likely to spark office romances.
A recent survey by whatsyourprice.com found that over half of those romantically involved with co-workers said the affair had begun after Xs were sent in texts and emails.
The use of the ‘X’ in the office world seemed to begin in largely female-dominated workplaces, creating a relaxed and friendly tone among co-workers. Now used by both male and female colleagues, can the wrong message be given off?
The majority of those surveyed however said they were not put off by using ‘smileys’ and ‘Xs’ and admitted to automatically using them when messaging co-workers, even though it could potentially give off the wrong impression.
The survey also found that a staggering 90 per cent of women and 85 per cent of men agreed that receiving a message signed off with a ‘X’ before a first date increased the likelihood of intimacy.
Is this office ‘kiss’ acceptable or should it be kept to personal relationships?
