Several protestors, campaigning for the release of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, were arrested on Friday in the French city of Marseille for wearing balaclavas in a public place.
The arrest follows the new French law, which sees a ban of Muslim niqaks and all face-coverings in public places.
Around 30 demonstrators gathered in a peaceful protest outside the Russian consulate at the time of the controversial Pussy Riot trial on Friday.
Police arrived at the scene and when asked by a newspaper why the peaceful protesters were asked to stop, a senior officer explained: ‘They were wearing balaclavas in a public space. It’s illegal.’
Introduced by Nicholas Sarkozy’s government in April 2011, the ban only makes exceptions for motorcycle helmets or sports equipment. Under French law, the case can be referred to a local judge who can hand a €150 fine and/or a citizenship course.
Three members of Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in prison for hooliganism.
