By Natasha Wynarczyk - Friday 3 August 2012

JESSICA ENNIS COMPETING AUGUST 3RD rex

Sheffield athlete Jessica Ennis began her quest for a gold medal in the heptathlon today.

The 26-year-old got off to a good start in the 100m hurdles, setting a new British record of 12.54s. This beats a previous record set by heptathlete Tiffany Porter in 2011.

She then followed her success by coming third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.86m. She is currently top of the leaderboard.

This evening she will compete in the shot put and 200m. Tomorrow she will take part in the long jump, javelin before finishing after the 800m at 8.35pm.

She missed out on the Beijing games in 2008 due to an injury, but is now one of team GB's strongest hopes after winning silver in the 2011 World Championships and 2012 World Indoor Championships.

Marie Claire's February 2012 issue, which featured Ennis on the cover, was beamed onscreen during yesterday's BBC Olympics coverage.

We're cheering her on all the way!
