After much speculation it has been confirmed female competitors are representing Saudi Arabia at an Olympic level for the first time.
The country has announced it would be sending two women to compete in judo and track and field events.
For female athletes Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani and Sarah Attar, this means breaking the all-male teams tradition.

Cultural customs will still be in place, as the women are still required to cover their body with leggings, long sleeves and the head-scarf.
This revolutionary move is likely to open doors for future aspiring female athletes. The Ministry of Education says ‘that it is considering introducing physical education in girls’ schools’ allowing them to break the mould and be inspired and encouraged by this year’s role models.
