At least 14 people have been killed and 50 injured at a midnight shooting of the Dark Knight Rises.

A man wearing a 'Bane-style' gas mask and body armour hurled a tear gas bomb and opened fire at the screening, near Denver, Colorado.

Children as young as six are said to be among the victims of the massacre. An 80-year-old is believed to have been shot dead at point blank range.

Witness Paul Otermat told Sky news that he saw a man in a black jacket walk to the middle of the screen.

He says: 'I thought it was a publicity stunt at first. Then he threw tear gas at the crowd and started firing shots.'

A man in his early 20s is in custody.
