Women are more likely to log onto Facebook and Twitter while men prefer gambling and gaming websites, according to new research.

Women are also more likely to use the internet to help make life easier, such as for making travel reservations.

The study by the University of Bath, which examined the web use of 500 first year university students, was a repeat of a study which took place 10 years ago. The original research found there was no difference.

However since the launch of popular social networks like Facebook there has been a more distinct gender difference in the way people use the internet.

Dr Richard Joiner, lead author of the study, said: ‘Our findings indicate that rather than transcending or overcoming gender differences in wider society, internet use by males and females seems to reflect, and in some instances even exacerbate, these broader trends.’
