Jessica Ennis left her competitors in the shadows as she dismantled Denise Lewis's 12 year British heptathlon record in Gotzis.

With a score of 6,906 she was the eighth woman to break 6,900 and was 132 points above her nearest rival and world champion, Tatyana Chernova of Russia.

'I am so happy,' says Ennis. 'I haven't wanted to speak about it, but the British record has been at the back of my mind.'

Producing her best ever 100m hurdles in a heptathlon, Ennis hit back at critics who have said she is carrying too much weight in the run up to the Olympics.

'I heard what was going round with those comments about being fat,' she says. 'But I was just focussed on coming here and competing the best I can.'

And that's exactly what she did. Despite a disappointing failure to clear 1.88m in the high jump, which Ennis relies on to form a gulf between her and her rivals, she excelled in the shot and 200m making her the one to beat at London 2012.
