Prince William and Kate Middleton meet Michelle and Barack Obama

Prince William and Kate Middleton today welcomed Barack and Michelle Obama to Buckingham Palace, in their first official engagement as a married couple.

The newlywed Duke and Duchess of Cambridge received the Presidential couple in the historic 1844 room at Buckingham Palace, amid sumptious grand surroundings.

According to Clarence House, the two couples enjoyed a brief 10-minute meeting, and chatted informally.

And they certainly seemed to get on like a house on fire. While Prince William was pictured deep in conversation with the President, his new wifeKate Middleton looked relaxed and happy as she chatted to the First Lady.

It's hard to say who looked more chic - the impossibly beautiful Kate, in a simple nude fitted dress, statement gold necklace and small black clutch, or the eternally chic Michelle Obama in a floral skirt and cropped cardi.

In her first appearance as a royal wife, the Duchess seemingly took to her new duties with ease, smiling and laughing as she spoke with the President's wife.

It's thought the Presidential pair will tour the royal art collection this afternoon, before attending a lavish banquet hosted by the the Queen tonight.
