Samantha Cameron ready for the election spotlight
By Lucy Halfhead on Thursday 11 March 2010
David Cameron revealed last night that his wife, who he described as ‘an amazing woman,' had asked to be involved in the general election campaign and that the country would be seeing a lot more of her.
He said: ‘So, Britain get ready.' Samantha has previously refused to make public comments but has now recorded a television interview which will be broadcast on ITV this Sunday. That will be seen as her introduction to the election campaign.
Her role in the campaign will mean both main party leaders are prepared for their wives to figure prominently in the fierce battle for Downing Street. Sarah Brown has in the last 18 months assumed a much higher-profile. She has even taken to the stage at successive Labour party conferences to introduce her husband.
Mr Cameron told The Alan Titchmarsh Show: ‘She said to me the other day when we were having breakfast 'I know I work hard and I have my own business, but I want you to do this, I want you to win. I'm right behind you. Tell me what I can do to help. I want to get out there'.'
Mr Cameron added that his wife, who is the creative director of the luxury stationers Smythson, was ‘a very successful career woman' who had helped ‘transform a great British business.'
The Conservative leader has seen his commanding poll lead diminish in recent weeks leading to concerns that he will not be able to secure a majority when the country goes to the polls on 6 May. Critics will argue that deploying his wife is part of a strategy to reverse his fortunes.
