GMTV to be axed?
By Lucy Halfhead on Friday 27 November 2009
The future of GMTV is in doubt after ITV became the sole owner of the breakfast broadcaster.
ITV, which already owns 75 per cent of the early morning television show, announced it had bought the remaining stake from Disney for £18 million.
Following the announcement, GMTV staff were told yesterday that a review would begin this week looking at all aspects of the operation.
Despite a revamp and a new line-up announced in the past 12 months - featuring Emma Crosby, the former Sky business broadcaster, and Kate Garraway - GMTV has seen ratings plummet to an average of 900,000, while BBC Breakfast and Radio 4's Today programme have seen figures increase.
GMTV has long been a breakfast favourite, once drawing in six million viewers a day. However, it was damaged by revelations of fraud in its premium rate phone-in competitions in 2007. It was fined £2 million for duping viewers into paying to enter a competition they could not win.

I like the formatt of the show, but I think they have employed the whole of the worst people on tv just in one programme. Talentless and boring personalities.
Comment by Pamela Griffiths on November 27 12:31
It's become very boring and I hardly ever watch it any more. I also hate the fawning interviews with Brown and co.
Comment by Mavis Robson on November 27 12:35
Emma Crosby is boring, with no conversational skills.
Comment by Susan on November 27 12:40
The show needs to appreciate where people are
Their format only appeals to the celebrity drawn -
Business people turn to BBC1 - you are guaranteed of interesting stuff!
I am not convinced GMTV could produce as sturdy a show as BBC Breakfast
They should however start to consider
1. the line up
2. more financial areas
3. more solid guidance from experts
4. less showy competitions

Never watch it as I find BBC Breakfast much more interesting, too much inane babble on GMTV!!
Comment by Janet de Vries on November 27 12:48
i would really miss gmtv as i watch it every morning before i go to work .
also it was not the only tv programme to be caught up in that fraud business
Comment by kath marshall on November 27 12:49
I absolutely adore GMTV - especially Kate Garraway - the ultimate MILF. The sexual chemistry between Emma and Andrew also gets me a excited in the morning - it would be a disgrace to lose it.
Comment by Becky on November 27 12:53

Comment by RIA WITHERS on November 27 12:57
nooooo ...... I love watching gmtv when im getting ready for work in the mornings.
Comment by barbara dixon on November 27 12:57
Haven't watched it for years! Who on earth can get out of the door in the morning with the tv - If there felt like the was an option to loaf on the sofa instead of go to work then I'd be sacked in no time!
Comment by Nickster on November 27 13:01
I would very much miss Penny Smith, especially the early morning banter she has with John Stapleton. I would also miss Andrew Castle. The programme is a mix of lightheartedness and seriousness where appropriate. Don't do it!
Comment by Lana on November 27 13:03
I think it would be a real shame if GMTV were to go. I love the show, and the presenters make it fun and easy to listen to.
Comment by Noel on November 27 13:33
bring back fiona phillips!!
Comment by tracy kosmalski on November 27 13:34
I hate to say it ........ but it is way past its sell by date ! And some of the segments make you cringe. I personally do like Kate Garraway or Ben Sheperd ..... sorry GMTV !!
Comment by Gemma on November 27 13:42
Don't watch GMTV since Emma Crosby joined...she spoilt it for me..she just cannot present or chat..so useless...only turn on once Lorraine comes on at 8-40am...would miss her show.....
Comment by Margot Billington. on November 27 13:47
I agree wholeheartedly with ALL the above comments - GMTV's presenters are the WORST! Kate's lisp is so annoying and Emma looks so false reading permanently off autocue with little or no feeling. They ARE a talentless, OVERPAID bunch of people! I much prefer BBC, the presenters have character!
But - this is only MY opinion!
Comment by GDB on November 27 13:49
I love GMTV and always have it on in the morning getting ready for work! BBC news is too serious that time in the morning.
Comment by Debbie on November 27 13:50
I like to watch GMTV in the morning when I am getting ready for work. Its the only time I hear the news and the weather report
Comment by willows mum on November 27 14:01
I do watch some of GMTV but am getting increasingly fed up with their sensationalist style of reporting. They seem to want to see the worst in every news story. I would be sad to see it go and just think they need to reign in their style of journalism as it's supposed to be a morning news/chat program not a tabloid.
Comment by Emma on November 27 14:34
I really used to enjoy GMTV - and still do when Penny Smith and John Stapleton are presenting..but the format's changed a lot ..I think it's cheap, tacky and so repetative..Kate and Emma are always belittling the male presenters - and Lorraine Kelly.well...everything's greet!! the fashion and hair features only seem to be for women with long hair and ages between 15-35! BBC morning tv is much more "gown up"!
Comment by Elaine Wayman on November 27 14:39
I think Andrew Castle is just awful. He thinks he is perfect but he's boring!
Comment by Gillie on November 27 14:53
Shame it has been getting lost for a long time but ....people at home enjoy it....
needs a fresh format....hope they do.
Comment by anon on November 27 15:03
like the show, but not same since Fiona left, needs a radical shake up. fashion/monetsaving tips great
Comment by zebadee on November 27 15:11
GMTV is fab!! I have to put it on to wake up in the morning-catch up on news and weather and a of bit gossip before the kids switch to Milkshake! Not keen on Emma Crosby though-dullsville!
Comment by Nat on November 27 15:23
I have always enjoyed GMTV since it first came on-screen. Usually watch it now while I'm getting ready for work. However, this year has seen quite a bit of change, and unfortunately, not always for the better. It is becoming in danger of over-sensationalising "news-worthy" items; the newer presenter, Emma Crosby, I'm sorry to say has not been an asset...she is so wooden & presenting skills =0. To me, Penny & John make a great team, so leave them alone to get on with it! Don't axe it.....please just improve it for the better, & listen to the public. After-all we are your viewers!!
Comment by Brenda on November 27 16:04
I like Kate but I don't think Emma has the same charm and seems to be a bit straight laced. I still like Richard maybe he should be on the sofa full time not just being the telly critic
Comment by Isobel S on November 27 16:06
The format is infantile - centred on such rubbish as "I'm a celebrity" Presenters are lightweight and ask ridiculous and insensitive questions. They bicker amongst each other and either suck up to celebrities and politicians or are inappropriately confrontational. Worst of all is Carla Romani fawning over so called stars in LA,
Comment by Linda Goddard on November 27 16:36
Like most of the output on ITV it is inane guff aimed at the dim end of the market. Shame really because when it started out way back in the 80's it was fab with Nick and Anne (and Ulrika the weather girl)but ITV's policy of always aiming for the lowest common denominater will be its undoing I'm afraid. The BBC never forgets to credit its audience with intelligence.
Comment by Sue on November 27 16:58
I think we are all fed up having kate garraway squinting at us and ballooning every now and again, the best she could do is to join a childrens tv program she possibly would then be more at home.
Comment by peter harrison on November 27 17:25
It makes the BBC breakfast show look like some formal load of uninteresting twaddle..
I will agree that it needs some sorting out especially the fuddy duddy clothes that some of the weather girls wear. Basically the Chris Evans show on C4 took a bit of beating...
Comment by Huggybear on November 27 17:50
I've always been a fan of GMTV, however of late it has become dull and lacks interest. Emma Crosby does not help, not much spark to her at all. They need a more glamourus female presenter who has a lively personalaity and can hold an interesting conversation with the guests.
Comment by Vickie on November 27 18:43
I watch every morning, but find Emma Crosby so dull and Andrew Castle isn't much better. Ben Shephard is great and Kate Garraway is OK (they have good on screen chemistry). Definitely need to find some more fun presenters.
Comment by Nicola Lester on November 27 18:46
I agree with comment further below that Emma Crosby is an extremely uninteresting presenter - would rather watch paint dry. Ben is pretty boring lately too - time for a new sexy man on the couch. Love Kate though so hope they keep her.
Comment by anon on November 27 18:59
i used to watch it but don't anymore as i find kate garraway annoying and stuck up. also theres just nothing on the shows that keeps me interested.
Comment by lisa on November 27 19:49
Penny is the best she should be doing more of the show, I think she makes getting going morning seem less daunting. Emma is not as funny and hasn't got Penny's personality. The BBC show is just plain boring news and weather.
Comment by Audrey on November 27 20:59
used to watch GMTV but I think it's got to focused on celebrities and gossip, have switched to BBC Breakfast which is far better, no comparison.
Time to get rid of GMTV now I think, I won't miss it!

Comment by claire on November 28 09:49
Get rid of Lorraine Kelly!
Comment by Lucy on November 28 15:37
It use to be ok; but god i can not watch, first its them two talentless men presenters, who are without no personality and the way they gush and fawn its makes me sick, the people our only on to sell things after all. Its cringe the way they are with american stars etc. the only way is to sack the lot of them or give them a person lite transplant. But without a doubt will someone please sack andrew and that other young plonker
Comment by donna on November 28 16:52
I like Kate, and John Stapleton, but just can't take to Emma Crosby.
Comment by sharon cook on November 29 20:21
Penny Smith is without the best female on tv gmtv and should be top of the list to keep her job.emma crosby is to posh
kath garraway is part time but earns more than penny, completly wrong.
SO MAKE SURE PENNY GETS A PAY RISE AND KEEPS HER JOB
Comment by mike parker on January 07 11:27
