Britain hotter than the Bahamas
Sun lovers can look forward to the hottest day of the year today with temperatures forecast to be higher than the Bahamas.
After sizzling at 31˚C (88˚F) on Tuesday – when it was 28˚C (82˚F) in the Caribbean capital of Nassau – thermometers in London are expected to reach 32˚C (90˚F) on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, Rhyl in North Wales hit a high of 25˚C, Belfast got up to 23˚C and, although warm at 21˚C, Bournemouth encountered some heavy showers which forced sunbathers off the beach.
Soaring summer temperatures and a scorching end to the month have given Britain its hottest June since 2006, according to the Met Office. It has been on average 1˚C hotter than normal with 195.3 hours of sunshine – 17% above average for the month.
The sunny weather is set to continue in the east and south-east of England until at least Thursday. However, with showers moving in from the Atlantic tomorrow night, the Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for western parts of Britain.
'It will be quite humid and thunderstorms are entirely a possibility,' said a Met Office spokeswoman. 'So far this month we have had little rain – only 59mm – but we are looking at anywhere between 25mm and 50mm in the west later in the week.
'The weekend looks like being a mixture of sunshine and showers across the country. Temperatures will be in the low to mid-20s, so not too bad at all. Next week we are set for some typical summer weather – sunny spells with the odd passing shower and maximum temperatures in the low twenties.'
