Festival-goers given chance to swap shoes for wellies
By Lucy Halfhead on Friday 15 May 2009
Footwear giant Schuh, is launching its first ever welly exchange at festivals this summer, offering festivalgoers the opportunity to keep their feet dry and do something for charity at the same time.
The idea is that festivalgoers, fed up of mud squelching through their open-toed sandals, swap their unwanted shoes for a brand new pair of wellies.
The discarded shoes then get collected by the European Recycling Company before being shipped to the Third World, where they are cleaned up and sold on, creating a much-needed local industry.
All the money made from sales remains and is used by local people, plus it's a way of providing cheap footwear for those who normally couldn't afford it.
An added bonus for festival organisers is not having to deal with the piles of shoes normally left behind after the events are over.
