Gordon Ramsay drops out of world top 50

Could Gordon Ramsay’s star be on the wane? The chef’s flagship Chelsea hideaway - Restaurant Gordon Ramsay - has just crashed out of an influential list of the top 50 restaurants in the world.

The small venue in the heart of Chelsea has long been considered one of Britain’s finest, if not its best. But a new list has left the restaurant off its list.

For the first time since Restaurant magazine started publishing its annual survey of the top restaurants in the world, Restaurant Gordon Ramsey has failed to make the top 50. Last year ranked 13th, it doesn’t even make the top 100.

The rankings are based on the selections of 800 of the most influential food writers, critics and chefs from around the world. Big names include Angela Harnett, Michel Roux Jnr, Oliver Peyton and Giorgio Locatelli.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the magazine’s editor, Paul Wootton, said Restaurant Gordon Ramsay remained 'great', but added: 'I think there may be a feeling among part of the restaurant industry and the foodie fraternity that some of the super-chefs with large empires of restaurants are spreading themselves too thin.'

Ramsay controls a group made up of gastropubs, restaurants and bistros from Paris to California.  Consequently he rarely cooks at his Chelsea flagship venue. Another of his restaurants, Maze, has also dropped from 57 on the list last year to 91 today.

It comes at the end of a disastrous six months for the chef, which began with a sordid alleged affair splashed across the tabloids, then reports that his restaurant at Claridge’s had suffered from a mouse and cockroach problem. Last week, another scandal suggested his meals arrived pre-packaged ‘on wheels’ to his restaurants.
