Mamma Mia! breaks more records

Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! has become Amazon’s best-selling product ever.

A rush of sales in the lead up to Mother’s Day pushed the feel-good film ahead of the previous best-seller, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book in JK Rowling's series about the boy wizard.

Mamma Mia! has become a sales phenomenon since it transferred from the West End stage to cinema screens in 2008. The film has taken a total of around £150 million at the British and UK box offices and nearly 1.7 million copies were sold on the first day of the DVD release last November.

The musical is based on the songs of the pop group Abba and stars Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. ‘Quite simply, Mamma Mia! is the UK’s biggest selling product of the internet era,’ said Sarah Hughes of Amazon UK.

‘It is a fun, feel-good film and some of its success can be attributed to the fact that it has offered a form of escapism during what have been difficult times in the UK over the last six months’.

The other entries in Amazon UK’s top five sales list are Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the films The Dark Knight and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
